Neighborhood Watch

Tina Yerzy and Chris Postle, our neighbors in The Greens At Loomis Trail,  are advocating for  Neighborhood Watch. Neighborhood Watch is a good program for identifying a person who is suspicious or not behaving normally. Be observant when you are walking, jogging, or driving through the neighborhood.

It is important to recognize and report suspicious behavior immediately by calling 911. Because we live outside of Blaine city limits, it will be a deputy from Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office who will respond to your call.

It is advised not to approach or confront a suspicious person or vehicle…but if you can, remember where you saw this person or vehicle and memorize a description of the person and/or license plate number. This will be very helpful information to provide to the deputy who is responding to the 911 call.

Thursday afternoon, July 13th, after a lovely visit with Ann Zimmerman, Ann decides to join me walking toward my home on Castlerock Drive. We start walking on the sidewalk, south side of Castlerock Drive. Friendship, Sunshine, Smiles, Lovely Yards and that bittersweet feeling when someone you admire is moving away. I’ll miss Ann, yet know she and Ed are doing what is right for them.

Suddenly we notice two black and white patrol vehicles, parked on the west side of Cambridge Loop, where that street joins Castlerock. A uniformed officer, standing silently, behind the protection of his open driver’s side door, is observing a suspicious looking man on the east side of Cambridge Loop.

We see this guy, red t-shirt, dark hair, disheveled, odd head tilt, unsteady standing, staring at a house. His back is to me and Ann.

Eye contact with the officer; the officer waves us to leave.

I give Ann a hug, assure her I feel capable of self defense. She backtracks to her home. I keep eyes down, to avoid any confrontation, and casually walk home with heightened awareness, anticipating running footsteps, a possible attack from behind.

Friday afternoon, Tina Yerzy calls me. She and Chris want our neighbors to see the news, and become pro-active about neighborhood safety.

This is a call to action. If you feel inspired to investigate Neighborhood Watch, if you feel inspired to involve our neighbors, the HOA Board will help getting the word out. The best way to connect with the HOA Board is by using the Comments or Inquiry form on our website – because website forms are set up to notify all the HOA Board members.

We all want a friendly, beautiful, and SAFE neighborhood.
